Turn your foreign training into an FAA A&P.
The English requirement, the translation rules, the IFO route — every extra step foreign-trained mechanics take, mapped out.
Same rules. Extra steps. Zero guidance in one place.
The FAA accepts foreign maintenance experience — but the process adds an English requirement, translated documents, the 50% rule, and possibly a US agent. Nobody walks you through all of it at once.
IFO or local FSDO?
Some countries route through the FAA International Field Office. Others through a stateside FSDO. Pick wrong and you're at the wrong desk with the wrong paperwork.
Your records aren't in English.
The FAA needs translated documents that match specific formats. A "close enough" translation gets bounced back and you start over.
Course 4 pulls every extra step into one place. The English requirement, the translation rules, the 50% experience rule, the IFO/FSDO decision, and how to travel for your DME appointment.
Prep your documents. Pick your office. Book your DME.
Three stages. Every extra international step, in order.
Prep your documents
English requirement, translated records, and the 50% rule for foreign experience.
Pick your office

FSDO vs. IFO + US Agent for Service
Which office handles your application — and when you need a US-based agent.
Traveling to a DME for the O&P
The Oral & Practical happens in the US. How to plan the trip and pick a DME.

Common questions.
Who is this for?
Foreign-trained aircraft mechanics who want to earn an FAA A&P — whether you're currently outside the US or planning a move.
Will my foreign experience count?
Often yes — but with limits. The FAA applies a 50% rule to some foreign hours and requires certified translation of your records. The FSDO or IFO makes the final call, not us. What we do: show you exactly what to submit and how.
What if I don't speak fluent English?
You must read, speak, write, and understand English to earn an FAA A&P. The FAA can test this in the oral. Module 2 covers what counts as proof and where to get an English proficiency evaluation.
Do I need a US Agent for Service?
Often, yes — especially if you don't have a US address. Module 4 explains when it's required, who can serve, and includes a template.
Do I have to travel to the US?
Yes, for the Oral & Practical exam with a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). Module 5 covers how to plan the trip, pick a DME, and time it after your writtens.
Is it self-paced?
Yes. Any device, any time zone. Templates are yours to keep.
